Configuration

  1. Figlut Configuration Manager: is used to configure all PC/server components. Locate it in the Windows Start menu / Metro (if you're using Windows 8) and launch it N.B. For at least the first time you launch it, you will need to run it as Administrator because it will create an Event Log in the Windows Event Viewer, hence it requires administrator rights.  If you're using Windows 7 or 8 you may need admin rights continuously since it attempts to write to various settings files located in the Program Files folders, which also requires administrator rights. Otherwise just grant  read/write permissions to your current windows user (or Everyone) in the relevant Figlut installation directories. Use the Figlut Configuratiion Manager to configure the following components: Figlut Configuration Manager
    1. Figlut Web Service:  We now need to point the Figlut Web Service to point it to the database we've just created. Under the Figlut Web Service component settings in the configuration manager expand the Database category.
      1. Select and update the Server Name setting e.g. localhost or SQL Server instance name, which can be found when connecting to SQL Server from Management Studio:Connect to SQL Server
      2. Select and update the Database Name to the name of your database. In my example it would be Stock.
      3. Select and update Username and Password with the credentials of the SQL login if you're using SQL authentication.
      4. Alternatively you can also just update the Connection String if you're using windows authentication. If you don't use this setting to manually set the connection string, the configuration manager will generate the connection string for you using the above parameters. N.B. updating the Connection String setting manually will clear the above parameters.
      5.  Change any other settings e.g. port number, URL suffix from Figlut to your company's name etc.
      6. Start the Figlut Web Service from the Windows Services which can be opened by running the command "services.msc" from the Windows Run dialog, or from Windows Computer Management snap-in:Start Figlut Web Service
      7. If the service fails it start, it probably means the database connection details you supplied were incorrect. To verify, open a Windows Event Viewer (run "eventvwr" from Windows Run dialog) and under Applications and Services Logs you will find the Figlut Web Service log which will show you any errors that occurred when you tried to start the service. Error starting Figlut Web Service
      8. If the service starts correctly, check in the event log for the URL under which it started. Copy the URL and paste it in Microsoft Internet Explorer. You should then be presented with the the current configuration of the service and API details if you're planning on consuming the service from your own code. Figlut Web Service Event Viewer started
    2. Figlut Desktop DataBox: if you've installed the Figut Desktop DataBox on the same machine as the Figlut Web Service then no further configuration is required. Otherwise we need to configure it to point to the Figlut Web Serice's Base URL which is hosted on another machine; under the Figlut Desktop DataBox component settings expand the Web Service category:
      1. Select and update the Base URL setting by changing the "localhost" in the URL to the IP address or hostname of the machine hosting the Figlut Web Service.
      2. Change any other settings e.g. application title, version, theme colors and your company logo. N.B. if you change the name of the logo image file to be used, make sure you copy the image file to the Figlut Desktop DataBox's installation folder.
      3. Run the Figlut Desktop DataBox. N.B. again don't forget to run it as administrator.
      4. Select the option to load a "DataBox" i.e. synonymous with a table. On the inputs tab you will see that controls are generated according to the fields you added in the database.
      5. If you have no data in the DataBox (table), now is a good opportunity to start adding some records/entities. Populate the input fields and click the Add button. Lastly click the Save button. Figlut Desktop DataBox

  2. Figlut Mobile Configuration Manager: used to configure all the Figlut components on a Windows Mobile device. Locate it under Programs and launch it.  Use the Figlut Mobile Configuration Manager to configure the following components:
    1.  Figlut Mobile DataBox: we need to configure the Figlut Mobile DataBox to point to the Figlut Web Service. The keyboard shortcuts Enter and Escape can be used to select options or go back to previous screen. In the Figlut Mobile DataBox settings, under the Web Service category:
      1. Select and update the the Base URL setting to by changing the IpAddressOrHostName to the IP address or hostname of the server hosting the Figlut Web Service.Figlut Mobile Configuration Manager web service settings
      2. 5. If you have no data in the DataBox (table), now is a good opportunity to start adding some records/entities. Populate the input fields and click the add button.Figlut Mobile Configuration Manager input controlsFiglut Mobile Configuration Manager date control
      6. Go back to the  DataBox screen and click save to save your changes back to server. N.B. The Figlut Mobile DataBox also supports offline mode, which after first connection to the server the database schema is saved to the device and switching to offline mode, allows you to save data to a CSV file instead of the server. Figlut Mobile DataBox loaded
