Installation

  1. Microsoft SQL Server: First and foremost you will need to download and install Microsoft SQL Server if you haven't done so already. Because installing MS SQL Server is out of the scope of this article I will not describe the installation steps here. However it is fairly simple even for non-technical users and installation instructions and prerequisites are included by Microsoft on the above download page. N.B. the Figlut Web Service is the only component dependent on MS SQL Server and has been tested against MS SQL Server 2008 Express R2 (free) and Standard editions.
  2. Figlut Suite:
    1. Download: next you will need to download the above mentioned Figlut Suite components (that are relevant to you) from the CodePlex project. At the time of writing the latest version was 1.1.0.0. If you are planning to use any of the Figlut Mobile components/toolkit for Windows Mobile 6, then you will also need to download the Figlut Windows Mobile Prerequisites.
    2. Windows PC/Server installation: install Figlut Web Service, Figlut Desktop DataBox and Figlut Configuration Manager. When attempting to install/run any of these components, you may be asked to download and install the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 Full package in which case don't argue and just do as it says i.e. continue with the  .NET Framework installation wizard and then once again run the Figlut installer that you were busy with.
    3.  Windows Mobile installation:
      1. Download and install Microsoft Active Sync 4.5 for Windows XP or Microsoft Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 32 Bit / Microsoft Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 64 Bit  for Windows Vista and later. If you're running Windows 7 or 8, you may get away without visiting the above download pages and instead when connecting your device it will simply start the download automatically as part of Windows update.
      2. Connect your Windows Mobile device to your PC via USB cable or Bluetooth and then make sure an Active Sync / WMDC partnership gets created i.e. the device shows up as connected and opening up Windows Explorer will show the device as an external drive whose file system can be browsed from your PC.
      3. Unzip the Figlut Windows Mobile Prerequisites and then copy all the cab files to the device to a convenient location e.g. /My Documents. Do the same with the Figlut Mobile DataBox and Figlut Mobile Configuration Manager CAB installer files.
      4. From the device locate and run the prerequisites CAB file installers one by one in any order.  As for the Figlut components, run the Figlut Mobile DataBox CAB installer first and then the Figlut Mobile Configuration Manager.
